Improved seeds, climate-resilient techniques and direct farmer support have helped cut malnutrition by 46%.
UGEAFI implements agricultural livelihood programs to improve food security, increase productivity and strengthen the resilience of vulnerable rural households across Eastern DRC. With more than 20 years of experience, it supports smallholder farmers in conflict-affected and displacement-prone areas including Minembwe, Idjwi, Bibokoboko, Lusenda and Mulongwe.
Between 2023 and 2026, UGEAFI supported 20,500 smallholder farmers — including 8,000 internally displaced people in Minembwe, 1,500 refugees in the Lusenda and Mulongwe camps, 9,400 farmers in Bibokoboko and 1,600 in Idjwi. It distributed improved, climate-adapted bean, maize, potato and vegetable seed, enabling families to restore production despite conflict and climate shocks.
Beyond inputs, farmers receive continuous training in improved practices — land preparation, crop and soil-fertility management, and climate-smart agriculture. Beneficiary households moved from one unbalanced meal a day to two balanced meals, contributing to an estimated 46% reduction in malnutrition, while surplus sales raised incomes by around USD 40 per month.
